What indicates the beginning of a great friendship? Is it pure coincidence?
A byproduct of favourable circumstances? You happen to see a person more or less regularly for one reason or another, you get to know each other, start to appreciate each other’s company, to really like each other. That happens every once in a while. At school, at work, with neighbours, later on in life with other mom’s at school, at the gym. But a lot of those friendships are temporary. You have shared secrets and sorrows, have laughed and maybe cried together, but the moment the common ground that unified you – school, work, gym – is gone, your ways part and you loose touch, although you live in the same city.
A rare number of friendships last though. Even if you live continents apart, in different timezones, climates and circumstances, you keep in touch, you grow closer.
I met Corey more than 20 years ago when I was taking a sabbatical in L.A. I didn’t know a soul but somehow I found her. We had 6 month to get to know each other. My English was poor, I had no job and little money, but I had a lot of time on my hands. And I was willing to dive into her world even though I understood just half of what she was saying. We partied, we drank, we smoked, we watched movies, we laughed and we cried together. And then I left, back to Germany, totally broke, but with the treasure of a new friendship in my suitcase (sorry for being so kitschy) and the will to change my life. That could have been the end of it. L.A. – Munich, not a good start for a longterm friendship, but for some reason we always managed to see each other at least once a year. We made it happen, had jobs that brought us close. We met in Paris, in London, Amsterdam, New York and Istanbul. We both had two girls. We brought the kids and the husbands, connected the families. We rarely ever speak on the phone or e-mail, but when we meet, we are close. We grew together. For some reason I doubt that it was pure coincidence that we met. It was meant to be. I had that feeling, right from the start…
