What a beautiful dog. Don’t you agree? Soft and silky fur, beautifully sprinkled like a poppyseed muffin, a cute white bib and slightly bicoloured amber eyes. People stop and ask me what kind of dog it is all the time. They get this kind of dreamy look on their face and tell me that they would like to have a dog like that.
I get annoyed when I hear people saying that because it’s all about the look.
Dogs like that are trendy. They suit the bearded man-from-the-mountains-look. But let me tell you one thing – if you have a dog like that you won’t have time to groom your beard for an hour in the morning because a dog like that likes to move. At least 2 hours a day. Even when it’s raining. And then you’ll have to clean the dog. If you are an ambitious and responsible dog owner you’ll spend your weekends training the dog. Every couple of weeks you will have to drag huge bags of dog food to your house. And every once in a while you will throw yourself in front of a mentally disturbed Mastiff to save your dog from being eaten alive (if you’re not fast or deft enough you will have to spend extra time and money at the veterinarian). You will not be able to go to the nice beaches in Italy anymore, neither to the nice restaurants. And you will have to pay extra cleaning at your hotel (if they allow dogs at all). Luggage will be minimal due to dog space in the back of the car. Car will smell of dog. And be hairy.
The list could be continued. Do not get fooled by a pretty fur and puppy dog eyes!
But if all that doesn’t scare you off – you definitely need a dog. And it’s so worth it. And you will look all rosy-cheeks and never get a cold again. You’ll have so many new friends (dog owners) – and only a few old friends less (the ones that got bitten as a child). But whatever reason you get a dog for, don’t get one only because you think it’s beautiful.
P.S. We didn’t pick ours, he was returned to his mom after a few weeks and needed a new place urgently. We were lucky.
