‘Ah, that bloody thing again, you can’t breathe properly underneath it!’ Yeah, right, sometimes the air gets humid and heavy under the mask, especially when you’re physically exerting yourself. And you don’t recognize people anymore – the lower part of your face is more important than you think. Everything sounds muffled when wearing a mask. You don’t see a smile. Lipstick dosn’t make sense any more.
No smiling, that’s sad. Although, someone once said ‘I think we look into each other’s eyes more intensely now’. If smiles and handshakes are no longer an option it’s more about finetuning: little smile wrinkles around the eyes, a lift of an eyebrow, a blink. Perhaps you need to pay more attention to the small nuances now. For sure you can do without lipstick for a while, a little less petroleum, microplastics and aluminum in this world doesn’t hurt. And usually, among the many masks you own, there is always the one that’s a little looser and more airy, so that intensive talking and physical activity doen’t make you faint right away.
But then there is also freedom. The one that’s limited now. Exactly, that’s the one we are talking about. When you are suddenly told what to do or not to do. When you can no longer meet whoever you want whenever you want it. When you’re scared it’ll get worse. When you’re not allowed to hug anymore. That’s hard. Especially for those who can’t defend themselves. Those who may not have a lot of time left. Who might have a weak immune system. Or those who are simply scared. That’s what makes this whole ‘mask issue’ interesting. Because it’s not only about yourself: Mask on = I protect myself, mask off = I don’t protect myself, but it is also about protecting others or at least letting them know that you care about them. That you care about their fears and vulnerability. That you show respect. If we can do that just by wearing a bit of cloth in front of our mouth and nose, then we’re actually quite well off. That might be even better than smiling.

Of course, Gunnar wears a mask (from Aldi), a hat by Diamond Supply Co. x Dogtown, mended sneakers by Diamond Supply Co., vintage french army shorts that he got decades ago at a pay by weight vintage store in Berlin and a vintage sweater from Sweden.
