Opinions are rather devided about the pageboy cut. I think I am not exaggerating when I say that roughly 99,9 % of all men take quite a dislike to it whereas most women think it’s super cute and cool (going back to my very personal experience when I had my hair cut pageboy style). Why is that? It’s such a sleek and stylish way to wear your hair, so easy, all you need is straight hair and a round brush. Your hair looks soft, shiny (if you use the right conditioners), almost childlike…..hold on, maybe there’s the problem, childlike doesn’t equal adult sexuality. Is it really that plain and simple again? Or is it rather the opposite? This hairstyle makes your hair look shiny like metal, like a helmet of a modern day Jeanne D’Arc. Martial and invincible. A steel symbol for emancipation. That definitely scares most men away. The origins of the female pageboy cut go indeed back to the 1910/20s, when women cut off their hems, freed their bodies of corsets, played tennis, drove automobiles – and wore their hair short and boyish in a pageboy style. Women’s liberation. What can be more scary to men. A male pageboy cut? Because it’s a symbol of suppression (male servants in the Middle Ages wore it) or lack of money (bucket on head – cut along the rim – done)? Quite the opposite! Think of the Who, The Rolling Stones, the Ramones! They liked their hair nice and neat and round at the edges! Pageboy cut is Rock’n’Roll! But those were the 60s and 70s. The year 1980 brought along the epitome of a little boy’s visual nightmare: Little Lord Fauntleroy. Velvet Suit, ruffeled blouse – and a perfect golden pageboy cut. If you had to watch that film one Christmas too many I can fully understand that this sort of haircut makes you shiver (and that you get goosebumps touching velvet).
